FRESH LIVE WORMS
Outside the
fisherman’s supply shop stood the notice,’ Fresh live worms’, obviously fresh
from the soil.
If you were
called a worm, you would squirm, God called Jacob a worm, and it was no insult,
for HE promised to this human ‘worm’ and his descendants salvation and help,
with the accompanying ability and strength to defeat Israel’s enemies.
Worms are
insignificant, little creatures, working together, for no-one is boss. Although
toothless, their minute jaws are able to grind stones. As the worms wriggle in
the soil they form paths for sun and light to enter, and water to filter
through.
Worms burrow
upwards to draw the compost, which they digest with their saliva and pass the
casts which enrich the soil.
50,000 worms in
one acre of land collectively enrich 15 tonnes of soil and lift the level 2 ½
cms ( one inch ) annually.
That’s
cooperation for a purpose.
Worm farming is
a multi-million dollar industry in USA , who annually export 120 tonnes of
worms to Japan.
GOD said to
this human ‘worm’, Jacob, ’I will make you a new, sharp threshing instrument
having a mouth. You will thresh the
mountains and beat them small, and make the hills as chaff.’ ( Isaiah 14,15 )
The whole
chapter pulsates with God’s promises to Christians prepared to be fresh, live
worms, aerating the world with the warmth and light of God’s love, making paths
for the cleansing water of the scriptures, and the purifying ministry of the
Holy Spirit.
It is consoling
that we are not lone worms, for Isaiah wrote of God’s promise, ‘Don’t be afraid
or dismayed. I am your GOD to help and
strengthen you. I will even hold your hand.’
(41:10)
