MORE THAN DIAMONDS

In Nashville, Tennessee, we visited the Queen of Tennessee Plantations, which surround the beautiful Belle Meade Mansion.

In the mansion’s high-ceilinged rooms we viewed magnificent portraits and paintings, priceless porcelain and china, curved furniture and ornate silver of the 18^th and 19^th centuries.

The guide led us to a window marked with the name of a lady, who was an ancestor of our hostess. The girl became engaged to a young man who placed on her finger a ring set with a large diamond. Her jealous friends tried to deceive her and undermine her love for him, teasing her that his ring was not set with a diamond, but with glass.

Confident of the honour of his daughter’s fiancee, her father suggested she prove the diamond authentic by signing her name on the window. He knew that a real diamond would etch glass without breaking itself or cracking the glass of the window.

The daughter obeyed her father’s unusual request as she signed her name on the window with the diamond, proving the gem’s worth, and the true love of her sweetheart.

I thought of my heavenly bridegroom, the Lord Jesus Christ. He offered me more than a diamond, or my name etched on glass. When I first trusted Him for my salvation, He wrote my name in the Lamb’s book of life.

Malachi wrote: ‘A scroll of remembrance is written of those who reverence and honour God.’ ( Malachi 3:16 )

Luke affirmed: ‘ Rejoice that your names are written in heaven.’ ( Luke 10:20 )

Paul encouraged the Philippian believers: ‘ Help those whose names are written in the book of life.’ ( Philippians 4:3 )

John records: ‘Nothing impure, shameful, deceitful belongs to those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.’ ( Revelation 21:27 )
