FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT.

Because our village home lacked electricity, each night we lit small kerosene lamps with their upright glass funnels. As well a pressure lamp shone brightly, but was uncomfortably hot, and needed regular pumping.

One night we returned late from visiting friends. In the dark we groped for matches, never knowing what might lurk in the way of spiders, scorpions or a snake.

Father lit a match to locate the bottle of methylated spirits, which usually stood on the shelf. He poured some into the base of the pressure lantern, replaced the glass, and lit the wick; but nothing happened.

‘That’s funny, Dad,’ said John. ‘Try again.’ Dad lit another match, without success. He sparingly poured in more spirit, and despite two more attempts, we stood in the light of a tiny candle which Ruth discovered on the shelf.

‘Are you sure you used the right spirit?’ I questioned. Father leaned over to examine the label on the bottle. He straightened, showed us the bottle, and we all burst into hilarious laughter. It was a bottle of Coffee Essence.

Ruth reached for the right container of fluid and Dad soon lit the lantern which gave light to the whole house.

The Lord Jesus said, ‘Be filled with My Spirit, and out of your inmost being will flow rivers of living water,‘ which is the life of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He is LIGHT and in Him is no darkness at all.

In your bible find Ephesians chapter 5 verse 18, and read how we should not be wicked or naughty. ‘We are to be filled with the Spirit.’

That is God’s Holy Spirit whom Jesus had promised to be our Helper, our teacher, when Jesus returned to heaven. He would help us to remember all we had learned from the Scriptures as well as bravely living like christians.

Turn to John chapter 3 verse 8, which tells about God’s Spirit. We cannot see Him. He is like the wind, which sometimes blows near us. At other times the wind blows in another place. So God’s Spirit is like that – going about to help christians everywhere to live in a way that pleases God.

The Holy Spirit teaches us that God is holy, loving, forgiving, as well as Creator who owns the whole world.

Ask God’s Holy Spirit to help you to live to please God, so that you are like a light showing God’s love to your family and friends.
