AN ONLY BOY

When Abraham was ninety-nine,
And Sarah old as well,
Three messengers from God appeared
Privileged their news to tell.
When Sarah heard the news from God
She laughed inside her tent.
She thought she was far too old
To have a baby sent.
But our God never makes mistakes
And the little son was born
Just as God had promised
On that celebration morn.
His parents named the boy Isaac,
Into a strong, young man he grew
He learned to love and worship God
They taught him God was true.
One day God spoke to Abraham,
‘I want you now to go,
And sacrifice your only son,
Isaac, whom you love so.’
Why did the Lord ask Abraham
To give his precious boy?
Although it was quite difficult
Abraham was willing to obey.
With Isaac Abraham walked three days,
Right up to Mount Moriah.
While Isaac carried a load of wood
His father carried the fire.
As they walked up to the mountain top
A question puzzled the lad.
‘The altar is here, the wood and fire,
But where’s the lamb?’ he said.
You are the offering, my dear son,
And with tears in his eyes,
Abraham prepared his son
To be the sacrifice.
He laid Isaac on the altar stones
Where he would give his life.
But God’s voice sounded loud and clear,
Just as he raised the knife.

‘Please hold your hand, obedient one,
Said God to Abraham,
And look among the bushes there,
And you will find a ram.’
Relieved, the father released his son,
He cut the ropes which bound.
Then with a praising, thankful heart
God’s promised ram he found.
As Abraham offered his son, Isaac,
God gave Jesus His Son, too,
But while Abraham set Isaac free,
The Lord Jesus died for you.
God gave His only Son to die
On the cross our sins He bore,
So everyone who repents and believes
Will have life for evermore.
So trust in Jesus, God’s sinless Lamb,
Who died, and then came alive.
Thank Him. Praise Him. Live for Him.
And to obey God always strive.
Genesis 22:1-14.
