I WISH.
I wish I had been a young boy
When Jesus lived down here,
Then I could go with other folk
And all His stories hear.
I wish I had been the young boy
Who gave His picnic meal,
Consisting of the loaves and fish,
So happy would I feel.
I wish I had been the young girl
Whom Jesus made quite well.
I’d follow Him wherever He went,
To all people His love I’d tell.
I wish I had been one of the guests,
When Jesus turned the drink
Into the wine at Cana’s wedding-
Exciting times, I think.
I wish I had been one of the crowd
And seen Zacchaeus climb
High up the sycamore tree to see
The Saviour at that time.
I wish that I had been a child
Standing in that crowd –
I would not let them shout and cry,
‘Crucify the Lord.’
I would have followed near the Saviour
Everywhere He went.
And I would have cheerfully run for Him
Wherever I was sent.
But I am not a child in Jesus’ time,
I am living here today,
I will serve Him just the best I can,
And walk the Jesus’ way.
I shall please Him by the work I do,
And in the things I say-
I will be unselfish to my friends,
And in the games I play.
To my parents who have cared for me
Obedient I will be.
I will not whinge, but smile and work,
And live quite happily.
Of course I wish I’d been a child,
When Jesus was alive-
But I will serve Him every day,
And to please Him I shall strive.
