EL SHADDAI - WHAT A GLORIOUS NAME FOR OUR LORD.

The Hebrew word ‘El Shaddai ‘means the Almighty and ‘all - sufficient One. or the breasted One, from whom all life flows.  Dr Joe Devadatta, surgeon from Vellore christian college, added the last phrase ( the breasted One ) to our understanding. Abraham had waited a generation for God’s revelation, for ‘When he was ninety nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him, ’I AM EL SHADDAI, ALMIGHTY God, walk before Me and be blameless. ( Genesis 17:1 )  The eternal One possessed the attribute of all might and sufficiency.  We must draw from HIM.

Moses, the Genesis writer illustrated this might when the Lord  miraculously granted conception , asking  ’Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time, I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.’ (Genesis 18:14)  God implied that as ‘El Shaddai, he would restore Sarah’s ability to nurse her son.  This miracle regenerated her womanhood, restoring her reproductive life, and ultimately breast function. Each godly mother rejoices and praises the Lord for the ability to carry the babe and provide nourishment for it.

Two generations later, in Genesis 36, the Lord repeated His title EL SHADDAI to Jacob, ’God said to him, ’I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply, a nation and a company of nations shall proceed from you, and kings shall come from your body.’  God‘s word promised fruitfulness and multiplication, which is the concept of EL SHADDAI,.’ Often many assume conception is their right, whereas it is the gift of the almighty God, especially where the Lord has granted some delay,

God honoured Moses when he graduated from EL SHADDAI - the Almighty- to Jehovah or Lord. ‘I am the Lord.’ ( Exodus 6:3)  He further bound Himself to them with an unassailable covenant. Then HE gave His liberating promise, ‘ I Am the Lord, I will bring you out from under the (crushing) burdens of the Egyptians; I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will (gloriously ) redeem you with a stretched-out arm and with great judgments. God revealed His saving nature.

The Psalmist had found the mysterious resting place, when he wrote, ‘He who dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (91;1) )  The most High may appear unattainable, but the abiding place is under the Almighty’s protection.  Oh, how often must we hide in such a secure spot! Almightiness ensures security, and guarantees adequacy. The child of God rests in that supportive shadow.

We are ‘filled with all the fulness of God‘, for we qualify for the almightiness of the Lord as shown in the truth,’ Now unto Him, who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.‘ (Ephesians 3:20)  In recalling scripture we may lose the sheer magnificence of the truth, because our limited minds cannot grasp the extravagance of his sure Word.

His might is evident, ‘Because he continues for ever having an unchangeable priesthood.‘ He can never be challenged for this unique ministry, nor can any usurp this privilege, which He continues until He calls us to His heavenly home. Triumphantly Scripture continued, ‘Therefore, he is able to save to the uttermost those who come unto God through  Him, since He ever lives to make intercession for them.’ ( Hebrews 7:25) ‘Saving to the uttermost’ tells us of His eternal might. He mediates in eternity for us with our every heart-beat.  Christ lives for that alone.

The Bible clarifies the might of our Lord, ‘I AM the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, says the Lord, who is, and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. (1:8)  He does not vary. Therefore, let’s implant these imposing truths in teaching  our children and grandchildren.  They will be richer for them.

In the Revelation, the Lord unfolded His truth,’ Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty who was, and is, and is to come.’ Then the praise song followed, ‘You are worthy, O Lord to receive glory, and honour and power: for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created. (4:8,11)  God claimed that His Son was worthy of highest honour for His magnificent creation. My article ‘God created male and female ‘ on this web site exhibits His glorious creation of both man and woman.              Please feel free to pass this on to dear friends in Christ.

Later in the Revelation, they ’Sing the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb

( Who is the dying Son of God ), Great and marvellous are your works, LORD GOD ALMIGHTY!  ( the title of EL SHADDAI ) Just and true are your ways. O King of saints.! (15;3)  The almightiness of the Lord is linked with Moses, who delivered  the children of Israel; and prescribed God’s plan for the Passover feast,  foreshadowing  the Saviour‘s Passover, when  the Lamb of God, took away the sin of the world.

( John 1:29).

Jeremiah expressed the greatness of the Lord, when he wrote, ’Ah, Lord God, Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and stretched-out arm.  Then the arresting word, ’There is nothing too hard for You.’ (32;17 ) Scripture reveals our Saviour Lord with His majestic creation; and that nothing is impossible with an omnipotent God. While humanly, we are greatly limited, let’s recapture such empowering truth, modelling our prayer life on how influential He really is.

As a young Greek immigrant, Emmanuel found the Lord Jesus as his Savior and Lord while wandering in Sydney. He studied his Greek and English bibles, while growing in the faith.  He discovered his God was El Shaddai, the almighty One.  As a builder carpenter, He established an evangelical church; wrote weekly for the  national paper; maintained a regular ethnic radio; and now the television programme.  Have you discovered his name is EL SHADDAI?  It should be evident in every part of your life!
